Banned in DC: Bad Brains' Greatest Riffs distills the greatest hardcore punk band of all-time's career highlights down to a 23-track anthology. Prior to its 2003 release, several Bad Brains retrospectives and archival releases had been made available, but a proper entry route -- unless you consider one of the band's two greatest achievements, 1982's Bad Brains or 1986's I Against I -- was still necessary. This disc, smartly selected by band manager Anthony Countey, fills that void. It begins with the group's debut single, "Pay to Cum," and works through 1989's Quickness, their last truly significant album. For those who have been along for the whole ride, there's the previously unreleased "Riot Squad." However, this disc is valuable to the diehards as well, since a number of the inclusions are on CD for the first time. Plenty of fanatics made mix tapes as introductions for friends that resemble this disc. In that sense, this official release has been a long time coming. ~ Andy Kellman, allmusic.com

How Brains Make Up Their Minds

Walter J. Freeman, "How Brains Make Up Their Minds"
C..mbia U--ty Press | 2001 | ISBN: 0231120087 | 146 pages | PDF | 27,5 MB

I think, therefore I am. The legendary pronouncement of philosopher Rene Descartes lingers as accepted wisdom in the Western world nearly four centuries after its author's death. But does thought really come first? Who actually runs the show: we, our thoughts, or the neurons firing within our brains?

In the final episode Dr Alice Roberts explores how our species, homo sapiens, developed our large brain; and asks why we are the only one of our kind left on the planet today? The evolution of the human mind is one of the greatest mysteries. We are special because of our extraordinary brain, and to understand why we think and act the way we do, we need to look at where and why our brains evolved. The Rift Valley in Kenya is thought to be the crucible of human evolution, and here Alice examines the fossils in our family tree which reveal our brains have more than quadrupled in size since our ancestors split from chimpanzees. Drawing on research on social politics in chimpanzees, the cognitive development of children and the tools that have been found littered across the Rift Valley, Alice explores how and why our ancestors brains became so big. Its thought their need to understand each other and share knowledge has fundamentally shaped the brains we live with today.

Sex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love, and Language from the Insect World

Marlene Zuk, "Sex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love, and Language from the Insect World"
2011 | ISBN-10: 015101373X | EPUB, MOBI | 272 pages | 0,8 + 0,4 MB

Insects have inspired fear, fascination, and enlightenment for centuries. They are capable of incredibly complex behavior, even with brains often the size of a poppy seed. How do they accomplish feats that look like human activity personality, language, childcarewith completely different pathways from our own? What is going on inside the mind of those ants that march like boot-camp graduates across your kitchen floor? How does the lead ant know exactly where to take her colony, to that one bread crumb that your nightly sweep missed? Can insects be taught new skills as easily as your new puppy?
